To the Ends of the Earth.

The book of Acts is the second volume of Dr. Luke’s work. The preface in Luke’s Gospel (1:1-4) applies to Acts as well. In his gospel, Luke mentions eyewitnesses as his source of information and careful research as his methods. Luke is writing about “fulfillment” – about God implementing his great promises of Salvation. So Acts traces the movement of the gospel from Jerusalem out, over every barrier, to Rome. While the narrative is historically accurate (30-60 AD) the real action is God’s, as the risen Jesus continues to spread Salvation, by the Holy Spirit, through the church.

In Acts 1:8 Luke reveals the structure of our sermon series: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and of the end of the earth.”

The narrative centers around the movement of the gospel from:
*Jerusalem and Judea – Chapters 1-7
    *Samaria – Chapters 8-12
*Ends of the earth (first Asia & Europe, then Rome) – Chapters 13-28

The very structure of the book reveals Luke’s purpose in writing, namely to show the gospel reaching out, carried by Spirit-empowered messengers, under God’s oversight, to Jew, Samaritan and Gentile. The ascended Christ continues to direct and empower his church through his Spirit!

In summary, the Acts of the Apostles (or just “Acts”) is the history of the early Church from Christ’s Ascension to Paul’s arrival at Rome. But it is also much more than that. It is a book inspired by the Holy Spirit to tell the Church how God grows His Church, and how the Church can have an impact on the community and out in the world.
